Bicycle, moped, and scooter theft in the Netherlands saw a 1.56% increase between January and August 2026 compared to the previous year, with 65,479 reported incidents. While theft rates declined in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, student cities such as Groningen, Utrecht, Delft, Maastricht, and Enschede experienced substantial absolute increases. July was identified as the peak month for these thefts.

In Groningen, the rise in thefts has significantly outpaced the national average. The municipality recorded 2,352 registered thefts of bicycles and scooters, an increase of 304 cases over the same period in 2025. Local incidents in the Vinkhuizen district, including thefts at a community center and a residential complex, have highlighted specific vulnerabilities.

In response, local authorities, including Alderman Jalt de Haan, have launched campaigns encouraging the use of double locks and ART-approved security measures. Efforts are also being coordinated with police to address the specific trend of electric bike battery thefts.
