The Big Bash League (BBL) announced plans to host its first regular-season match outside of Australia on December 12 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The season opener for BBL 16 will feature a matchup between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Renegades.

League officials stated the move is intended to provide an “authentic T20 experience” rather than compete with the Indian Premier League. Chennai was chosen due to its cricket fanbase and historical ties to Australian cricket. The league has expressed interest in hosting further overseas matches following discussions with the BCCI and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association.

Following the announcement, ticket sales for the match commenced via the District by Zomato platform. Prices range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 6,000 for various tiers. Additionally, Cricket Australia has offered international travel packages through its travel office that include tickets and merchandise.
