The Metabarri plant has begun operations at the Artigas Ecopark in Bizkaia, Spain. This facility represents the country’s first public-private partnership to manage the complete biometanization process in one location. 

Supported by a 25 million euro investment, which includes over 17 million euros from Next Generation funds, the project is a collaboration between the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), and PreZero. The plant is designed to treat up to 50,000 tons of organic matter annually by converting waste from brown recycling bins into biogas and purifying it into biomethane for injection into the natural gas transport network. 

At full capacity, the facility is expected to generate enough renewable energy to supply approximately 12,700 homes per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% compared to fossil fuels, aiding industrial decarbonization efforts.
