In Germany, various initiatives have been established to monitor and protect bird populations. In the Selfkant region, volunteer programs focus on recording the nest activity of house martins and barn swallows during the breeding season.

In Schleswig-Holstein, the Michael-Otto-Institut (MOIN) coordinates breeding success monitoring for the endangered Eurasian oystercatcher in the Wadden Sea. This effort is part of the Trilateral Monitoring and Assessment Program (TMAP) involving Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, acting as an early warning system for declining populations.

As the season progresses, the Wadden Sea serves as a critical migratory hub for approximately ten million birds traveling along the East Atlantic Flyway toward Southern Europe or Africa. The area provides essential food and resting resources for at least 52 populations across 41 species. To observe these migratory patterns, the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park hosts the ‘Westküsten-Vogelkiek’ event.
