In mid-September 2026, the Lesvos Fossil Forest Natural History Museum and the Kalloni Environmental Education Center announced an open birdwatching event at the Kalloni Salt Marsh. The event was designed to showcase the island’s avian fauna, particularly during the autumn migration period when Lesvos serves as a vital station for birds traveling between Europe, Asia, and Africa.

By late September, these local efforts expanded into broader participation in the EuroBirdwatch 2026 event. In Lesvos, organized excursions at the Kalloni Marsh were scheduled for early October, involving the Greek Ornithological Society and the Hellenic Bird Ringing Center to collect data for the official Rapid Information Actions (R.I.A.) database. Similar birdwatching and educational activities were also coordinated in Soufli at the Dadia Information Center.
