Community leaders organized a gathering in the Birmingham Civil Rights District, involving alumni from Birmingham City Schools and activities at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Kelly Ingram Park. The event aimed to honor those who fought for justice and reflect on the legacy of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Coinciding with the anniversary of the 1963 Ku Klux Klan bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, the church opened a new visitor center designed to educate the public. During a memorial service, Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative addressed the community, noting that the remembrance occurs amidst a “narrative struggle in America” involving political efforts to alter museum content and challenges to the Voting Rights Act. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-15: 16th Street Baptist Church opens visitor center on bombing anniversary The 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham opened a new visitor center to mark the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 KKK bombing that killed four civil rights era youths. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/16th-street-baptist-church-opens-visitor-center-on-bombing-anniversary ### 2026-09-08: Birmingham to host commemoration of 63rd Civil Rights anniversary Birmingham community leaders are hosting a commemoration on September 19 to honor the 63rd anniversary of the city's pivotal role in the American Civil Rights Movement. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/birmingham-to-host-commemoration-of-63rd-civil-rights-anniversary --- Cite as: Birmingham Civil Rights anniversary commemorations.
