Birmingham is expanding its use of zero-emission technologies across different transport sectors. In July 2026, Birmingham Airport joined the UK-backed HyPRIME programme, a partnership involving ZeroAvia, Bristol Airport, ULEMCO, and GeoPura. This multi-million-pound project tests liquid-hydrogen fuel-cell aircraft to evaluate safety, economic factors, and infrastructure needs for future aviation.

Simultaneously, the city is transitioning its public transit via a hybrid approach of hydrogen and electric technologies. Through the Clean Air Hydrogen Bus Pilot, 20 double-decker hydrogen fuel cell buses from Wrightbus were introduced to the National Express West Midlands network. This complements an existing electric fleet, which included 170 new zero-emission electric buses as of April 2025, bringing the total number of electric buses in operation to 329.
