An investigation by Öko-Test into 52 canned food products has revealed widespread contamination of bisphenols, including Bisphenol A (BPA), Bisphenol S (BPS), and Bisphenol F (BPF). The study found that 42 of the tested products contained high or very high levels of these chemicals. Notably, Maggi tomato sauce ravioli was found to contain BPA levels more than 800 times the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The contamination is attributed to the coatings used on metal cans. Although many manufacturers have transitioned to BPA-free coatings for the interior of cans, exterior coatings often still contain bisphenols. During production, the stacking of cans can cause the exterior coating to touch the interior, leading to chemical transfer.

BPA is recognized as an endocrine disruptor that can interfere with the hormonal system and impact fertility. While the European Union prohibited the intentional use of BPA in food contact materials as of January 2025, a ban on the sale of cans featuring BPA-containing exterior coatings is scheduled to take effect in January 2028.
