Former Nagaon District Commissioner and Assam Civil Service officer Debashis Sarma has formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Guwahati. The induction, attended by state BJP president Dilip Saikia, included journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita.

Following this induction, the BJP has fielded Sarma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, which is scheduled for October 6. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced he will join the campaign for the seat after September 15. 

In related regional developments, the Chief Minister also inaugurated a new Integrated District Commissioner’s office and administrative block in Jorhat, alongside the Cinnamara Railway Overbridge, noting a transition away from colonial-era structures.
