A mother black bear and her cubs were trapped in a concrete water storage tank in La Verne, California, near the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. The animals were discovered by hikers who reported hearing distressed sounds, such as howling and whimpering, coming from the structure.

Authorities believe the bears entered the tank through a narrow opening or vent while seeking water during a period of high temperatures. During the rescue process, one cub managed to escape on its own.

To save the remaining bears, the La Verne Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife coordinated an effort to drain the tank, use a power saw to widen the access hole, and lower a ladder. The operation concluded successfully with the mother bear and the remaining cubs climbing out unharmed. Authorities have since secured the tank to prevent future incidents.
