Black-footed ferret populations are seeing a gradual recovery following their rediscovery in Wyoming in 1981. Through captive breeding and reintroduction programs, the species has been re-established across parts of the United States—including Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wyoming—as well as Canada.

There are currently an estimated 300 to 400 mature, wild black-footed ferrets. The species' survival remains critically dependent on prairie dog colonies, which constitute over 90% of their diet and provide essential burrow systems for shelter.
