Researchers from Keio University in Japan, working in collaboration with the U.S. National Institute on Aging, have identified two blood biomarkers—beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) and cystatin C—that may predict the risk of disability in very elderly populations.

The study, published in the journal ‘GeroScience’, monitored participants aged 85 to 89. Findings indicated that elevated levels of these proteins, which may reflect chronic inflammation and declining renal function, are consistently associated with a higher probability of developing functional limitations and losing autonomy.

To validate these results, the research team utilized data from the Invecchiare in Chianti (InCHIANTI) study in Italy. The Italian cohort confirmed that higher concentrations of B2M and cystatin C correlate with an increased risk of disability, particularly in individuals over the age of 80. The researchers suggest these biomarkers could facilitate earlier medical interventions to help older adults maintain independence.
