On August 11, Sebastian Achim was seriously injured during a shark tagging and research mission off the coast of Ardmore, County Waterford, Ireland. While attempting to handle a blue shark approximately two meters in length, the animal lunged and bit Achim’s left calf, causing a 10-centimeter wound and severe blood loss.

Achim’s companions used a rope as a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding before he lost consciousness. The Irish Coast Guard, involving the Rescue 117 helicopter and RNLI lifeboats, coordinated an airlift to Cork University Hospital. While doctors were able to save his leg, he requires further reconstructive surgeries.

Achim later noted that he does not blame the animal, stating that “the fish was right” and suggesting the attack was a natural survival instinct during handling.
