Bluetongue disease, specifically serotype 3, has been confirmed in various livestock populations across Spain during the 2026-2027 season.

Initial reports focused on Galicia, where a fourth outbreak of the year was confirmed in a cattle farm in Chantada, Lugo. This instance marked the first detection of serotype 3 in that province during 2026.

As the season progressed, the virus was identified in additional regions, including La Rioja, where a case was found during routine export controls, and Asturias. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) reported that the virus is circulating in multiple provinces, affecting cattle in areas such as A Coruña, Huesca, Lugo, La Rioja, and Seguroa, as well as sheep in Guipúzcoa, Navarra, Álava, and Badajoz. Authorities have emphasized that while the disease does not pose a risk to human health, measures such as vaccination and parasite control are necessary to mitigate impacts on livestock.
