Clemson University and BMW North America have collaborated to develop the Luminetta, an energy-positive electric vehicle prototype under the Deep Orange 17 project. Designed for urban commuting, the two-seat coupe is engineered to generate more energy from solar input than it consumes during a typical daily trip.

The lightweight vehicle, weighing approximately 550 kg (1,212 lbs), utilizes a combination of steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, and 3D-printed metal components. It features more than 1,700 photovoltaic cells integrated into its surfaces, developed in collaboration with Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. This solar skin allows the vehicle to harvest energy while both driving and parked, even under partial shading.

Simulations based on driving conditions in Greenville (USA), Frankfurt (Germany), Madrid (Spain), and Mumbai (India) indicate that the vehicle can produce enough surplus solar energy to provide an average of 31 to 50 km of additional driving range beyond a standard 20 km daily commute. The vehicle's design utilizes a boxfish-inspired aerodynamic shape to maximize efficiency and demonstrates the potential for solar integration to increase energy independence and reduce reliance on traditional charging infrastructure. While the project currently relies on computational simulations rather than independent road tests, the prototype is scheduled for exhibition at CES 2027.
