Boeing entered negotiations with the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), a union representing between 17,000 and 20,000 engineers and technical workers. Initially, Boeing presented a contract offer that was endorsed by the SPEEA negotiating team. The company warned that any labor disruption could further delay the certification of the 737 MAX 10 and the 777-9 models.

However, union members subsequently rejected the proposal. Approximately 64% of members voted against the agreement, and nearly 88% voted to authorize a strike, which could commence after the current contract expires on October 6. Despite the offer including a proposed aggregate wage increase of nearly 30% over four years, members expressed dissatisfaction, with some citing a lack of trust in leadership.

Labor tensions at Boeing have expanded as the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers also initiated strike actions. Approximately 33,000 machinists walked off the job at factories near Seattle and other locations after 94.6% of members rejected a tentative contract offering a 25% wage increase over four years. 

While the machinist strike is underway, SPEEA members have signaled readiness for industrial action, citing concerns regarding offshoring, safety standards, eroding job security, and salaries that fail to keep pace with inflation. The combined labor unrest is expected to halt the production of Boeing’s best-selling commercial aircraft, though it is not expected to impact existing commercial flight schedules.
