Boom Supersonic has completed the assembly of the core for its Symphony engine, which is designed to power the Overture passenger aircraft. The company plans to conduct the first engine ignition in November. The Overture aircraft, intended to carry 60 to 80 people at speeds of Mach 1.7, is expected to begin test flights in 2027, with a goal of commencing commercial service by 2030. The aircraft will be manufactured in Greensboro, North Carolina, and currently holds 130 pre-orders from airlines including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Japan Airlines.

However, the company faces skepticism regarding its delivery timelines. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby stated on the “Office Hours: Business Edition” podcast that the 2029 delivery goal for the Overture jet is unlikely to be met, noting that development and certification processes are expected to take longer than projected. Kirby cautioned that while United could be among the first to operate the aircraft, significant hurdles remain and success is not guaranteed.

In addition to aviation, Boom is expanding into the energy sector by developing natural gas turbines for AI data centers. The company has unveiled a new factory in Centennial, Colorado, for its Superpower 42-megawatt turbine and aims to deliver the first units to customers by mid-2027. Boom maintains that its turbine development is synergistic with the Symphony engine design, utilizing a prototype turbine core known as the Sprint Core, with testing scheduled at the Colorado Air and Space Port.
