Community-based conservation initiatives are expanding across Borneo to protect wildlife habitats and provide local economic incentives.

In West Kalimantan, Indonesia, the KehatiKu program, managed by Borneo Futures, pays villagers in the Kapuas Hulu district to photograph or record wildlife. This initiative aims to discourage the illegal wildlife trade by offering supplemental income to farmers based on their observations, with higher rates for endangered species like orangutans.

In Sarawak, Malaysia, the Global Wildlife Programme Malaysia has appointed thirty-nine community rangers to support the ‘Conserve the Bornean Orang Utan and its Habitat’ initiative. Operating across Ulu Sebuyau, Sedilu, and Gunung Lesong national parks, these rangers are part of a strategy to involve local residents in project management, increase regional income, and develop community-based ecotourism.
