Historical accounts of Borussia Mönchengladbach highlight a significant recovery period starting in 2011. Following the dismissal of coach Michael Frontzeck, the appointment of Lucien Favre led to a tactical shift toward compact defense and rapid transitions, eventually moving the club from a relegation threat to Champions League qualification.

More recent analysis of Borussia Mönchengladbach indicates a period of decline and internal struggle. The club has faced criticism regarding its squad quality and leadership, with calls for a structural overhaul of the board, management, and sporting direction to address a perceived lack of competitive pride.
