Boston College football faced No. 21 Southern Methodist University (SMU) at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas on October 3.

Prior to the matchup, Boston College held a 2–2 record and struggled with the lowest-scoring offense in the ACC, averaging 19.8 points per game. While quarterback Mason McKenzie provided a rushing threat, the passing game ranked near the bottom of the conference. SMU entered the game with a 3–1 record, led by quarterback Kevin Jennings, who had recently become the program's all-time leader in passing yards.

SMU secured a 25–16 victory, improving their record to 4–1. The Mustangs' defense played a decisive role, recording five sacks against McKenzie and holding the Eagles scoreless for seven consecutive possessions during parts of the game. Although Boston College outgained SMU in total yardage, SMU's ability to force turnovers and defensive pressure proved critical. Jennings contributed two second-half touchdown passes to Randy Pittman Jr. and Derrick McFall.

Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien attributed the defeat to a lack of discipline, noting that the team committed a season-high 11 penalties. O’Brien highlighted the necessity for improved blocking and execution to address aggressive defensive pressure in upcoming games.
