Following a 3-2 defeat in a Campeonato Brasileiro match, a dispute emerged between Botafogo and Grêmio CEO Alexandre Leitão. The conflict began after Leitão posted on social media that football is ‘cruel’ and claimed Grêmio was ‘robbed’ due to a disallowed goal by Carlos Vinícius, which was overturned by semi-automated offside technology. In his remarks, Leitão referred to Botafogo as a ‘team of crooks’.

Botafogo CEO Eduardo Iglesias initially condemned the comments as ‘absurd’ and described Leitão as a professional of ‘low level’. The situation escalated when Botafogo formally filed a representation with the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD). 

Botafogo argues that Leitão’s description of the club as a ‘time de picaretas’ (team of swindlers) violates article 243-F of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice. The case is currently pending before the sports tribunal, where a guilty verdict could result in fines or a suspension of up to 180 days.
