In July 2026 Brazil’s Federal Council of Medicine (Conselho Federal de Medicina, CFM) issued resolution 2.464/2026, formally authorising platelet‑rich plasma (PRP) as a complementary medical procedure. The regulation lifts PRP from the experimental category and permits its use for four osteomuscular conditions – knee osteoarthritis, lumbar discopathy, lateral epicondylitis of the elbow and meniscal repair.

The rule sets strict criteria: PRP must be prepared from the patient’s own blood, processed according to ANVISA standards, and applied only by physicians with specialist qualifications in the relevant area, within hospitals or day‑hospital units. It requires a medical diagnosis, individual clinical evaluation, patient consent, documentation and safety monitoring, while prohibiting the inclusion of drugs, stem cells, bone‑marrow concentrate, micro‑fragmented fat, and any advertising that claims guaranteed tissue regeneration.

The CFM’s decision, highlighted by officials and orthopedic specialists, aims to standardise the technique, improve patient access, and ensure ethical practice and patient safety.
