Brazil is advancing its road infrastructure through the adoption of electronic tolling technologies to reduce wait times and eliminate manual payments at traditional toll plazas.

In the state of Santa Catarina, a specific transition is planned for 2027 on federal highways BR-153, BR-282, and BR-480. The state will replace traditional toll plazas with a free-flow electronic system using eight gantries located in several municipalities, including Joaçaba, Concórdia, and Xaxim. 

Under this system, vehicles with electronic tags will be charged automatically, while others will be identified via license-plate cameras for later billing. Charges will be proportional to the distance traveled, with rates set at 50% of the contracted amount during the first year. The project involves approximately R$19.3 billion in investment and operational costs, with a concession auction scheduled for November 2026.
