Brazil’s sugar sector has experienced fluctuations in shipment volumes and market conditions. In mid-September, scheduled shipments totaled 2.22 million tons, a 10.3% decrease from the previous week’s projection, amid declining international prices. The Port of Santos handled the majority of this volume, primarily VHP sugar intended for foreign refineries.

By late September, trade policy changes emerged as the United States announced a reduction in its raw sugar import quota for Brazil for the 2027 fiscal year. The new quota of 100,000 tonnes represents a decrease of approximately 55,900 tonnes compared to the previous cycle. 

Industry representatives, including Renato Cunha of the association Novabio, estimated the reduction could cause a loss of at least $30 million in export revenue for northeastern Brazil. While producers may look toward the European Union, officials noted these markets often lack the price points found in the US. The redistributed quota volume will be allocated among 28 other countries.
