Indigenous communities across Brazil have launched a national mobilization to protest the ‘marco temporal’ legal thesis (PEC 48/2023). This proposed constitutional amendment would limit Indigenous land claims to territories occupied at the time the current Constitution was enacted on October 5, 1988.

In Roraima, protesters from the Raposa Serra do Sol territory blocked a section of the BR-174 federal highway near the Surumu River bridge. Demonstrators demanded that the Supreme Federal Court reject the proposal to protect their lands from illegal mining.

Further mobilization occurred in Alagoas, where groups including the Wassu Cocal blocked segments of the BR-101 and BR-423 highways. These protesters are advocating for land demarcation and demanding that legal discussions regarding land rights be conducted through in-person meetings rather than virtual sessions.
