In the summer of 2026, British Columbia experienced a sharp rise in accidental drownings, with 40 deaths recorded between May 1 and July 16—a 54% increase over the same period a year earlier. Victims were 86% male and alcohol or drugs were involved in 40% of closed cases; most fatalities occurred in lakes, rivers, and baths.

During National Drowning Prevention Week (July 19–25), health officials and the Lifesaving Society urged the public to be “water-smart” and wear personal flotation devices. Coroner Dr. Jatinder Baidwan noted that many recent drownings involved victims without life jackets, stating, “It won’t work if you don’t wear it.”

In response to five drownings in Okanagan Lake over a 37-day period, Kelowna-Mission MLA Gavin Dew announced plans to introduce the Child Water Safety Act when the legislature reconvenes on October 5. Modeled on Ontario’s Swim-to-Survive curriculum, the proposed school-based program aims to provide universal access to essential survival skills, such as treading water and swimming 50 metres, to ensure every child gains basic water-safety knowledge regardless of income or disability.

Recent incidents have continued to highlight these risks. On August 10, the body of a 13-year-old girl was recovered from Cultus Lake; officials believe she suffered a medical emergency while paddleboarding without a life jacket. Additionally, a nine-year-old boy was rescued after being pinned underwater by a current in the Shuswap River near Enderby. He is currently being treated for lung damage at Vancouver Children’s Hospital.
