In early September 2026, two separate incidents involving brown bears were reported in the Palacios del Sil municipality of León. On August 31, a dead bear was discovered in the Salientes area, and on September 1, a driver struck a radio-tagged bear on the CL-631 road near the Ondinas reservoir. While the vehicle sustained damage, GPS tracking confirmed the animal survived the collision.

By late September, further fatalities were reported in other regions of Spain. In Campoo de Enmedio, a subadult male was killed after being struck by a freight train, marking the first recorded instance of a brown bear being hit by a train in the country. Additionally, a young bear was found dead in a canal in Matarrosa del Sil, possibly due to an accidental fall. 

Authorities and environmental organizations are conducting necropsies to determine exact causes of death. These events occur as the Cantabrian brown bear population grows, leading to increased human-wildlife conflicts and concerns regarding animal mortality.
