In late October 2026, approximately 65 residents of an eight story apartment building in Bucharest’s Drumul Taberei neighborhood were preventively evacuated after a large crack appeared between two stairwells. While authorities investigated if a recent 4.9 magnitude earthquake caused the fissure, the Bucharest City Hall noted the crack had existed for nine years and was previously attributed to sewage system issues. Residents were eventually allowed to return after the State Inspectorate for Construction suggested structural resistance was not compromised.

Following these events, the Bucharest City Hall announced a broader timeline for seismic consolidation projects. Approximately 550 people from 217 families are expected to return to their homes in 2027 after work is completed on several historic buildings classified as Class I seismic risk. These projects include structures on Biserica Enei Street, Blanari Street, Știrbei Vodă, Boteanu, and Dianei. The municipality intends to begin consolidating approximately 20 more buildings next year using funds from the National Program for the Consolidation of Buildings with High Seismic Risk.
