The Bucharest City Council initiated discussions regarding a collaboration protocol between the Municipality of Bucharest and Sector 4. This agreement was designed to manage urban comfort during the modernization and rehabilitation of tramway infrastructure, which is part of a broader project to update approximately 50 km of tram lines to reduce emissions and congestion.

Following these administrative steps, modernization works have commenced on Corneliu Coposu Boulevard, specifically within Lot 1, identified as the largest and most complex segment of the project. This phase involves dismantling old tracks to create a new line connecting the southwest and northeast of the city via Piața Unirii. The investment, exceeding 58 million euros, includes the construction of 1.26 kilometers of double track and various platform extensions. The project is a partnership between Bucharest City Hall and Sector 4 City Hall, with an estimated execution period of 18 months, though the timeline remains subject to other regional infrastructure developments.

Work has since expanded to other segments of the network. On Lot 6, covering Bulevardul Lacul Tei, Șoseaua Petricani, and Bulevardul Dimitrie Pompeiu, the Tancrad – Erbașu association of builders has begun preparing rail installation and developing running track infrastructure, with local police managing traffic in the Pipera area.

On Lot 5, which spans 1.8 kilometers including Strada Armand Călinescu, Mântuleasa, and Vasile Lascăr, the timeline has been affected by archaeological discoveries. Excavations revealed historical foundations, stair fragments, and old heating system elements. While work was previously halted in August, the Bucharest Culture Directorate has indicated that only a portion of the discovered elements will be conserved to preserve the city’s history.
