Following a nine-year closure due to structural damage and leaks, the Hungarian government has begun planning the future of the Budapest Planetarium. In late July, Minister Zoltán Tanács announced that expert consultations would commence in August to evaluate three potential paths: a temporary reopening, a full reconstruction, or replacing the site with a new science museum and interactive center.

By August, the planning process moved toward a formal government proposal expected in September. Recent inspections by the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport have provided more technical detail. While the building’s structural condition is reportedly better than expected, the heating, cooling, and auxiliary systems require significant work.

Minister Tanács confirmed that a detailed proposal will be presented to the government in early September, focusing on two primary development concepts. The first involves a full renovation of the existing building to create a modern planetarium, estimated to take three to four years. The second is the creation of an international-scale science center, which could take six to eight years.

The facility’s iconic Zeiss Universal VI optical projector remains a central concern; it is in poor condition due to long-term disuse. Although it can still produce a basic star field, it requires thorough refurbishment and potential integration with laser projection technology. Further technical examinations are necessary to determine if the original equipment can be fully restored.
