In late October 2026, Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that sacred relics of Lord Buddha would be displayed across three towns in Arunachal Pradesh: Tawang, Bomdila, and Namsai. The exposition, organized through cooperation between the Union Ministry of Culture, the state government, and international Buddhist organizations, aimed to promote awareness of India’s Buddhist heritage.

On October 31, the exposition officially commenced with an inaugural ceremony at the Gaden Namgyal Lhatse Monastery in Tawang. Chief Minister Khandu noted the event reflects a commitment to cultural heritage and tourism, and he announced the formation of a state Buddhist confederation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also issued greetings, emphasizing the importance of preserving Buddhist sites and strengthening international engagement with the global Buddhist community.

The event, which marks the return of the Piprahwa Relics after more than a century, coincides with Lhabab Duchen, a significant occasion in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The exhibition schedule includes Tawang from October 31 to November 7, West Kameng from November 8 to 14, and Namsai from November 14 to 21. The ceremonial reception at Tawang Monastery included the presence of Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and large numbers of devotees have gathered to view historical exhibitions related to the discovery of the relics.
