Bulgaria is implementing new regulatory measures within its agricultural and food sectors to improve oversight and transparency.

In late August, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the National Revenue Agency (NAP) announced stricter controls on agricultural imports. This initiative aims to prevent tax evasion and market manipulation, specifically addressing discrepancies between purchase prices in countries of origin and declared values upon entry into Bulgaria. To support this, the NAP has intensified inspections of cargo vehicles and is coordinating with EU tax administrations to verify documentation.

By early September, focus expanded to domestic food safety and labeling. Following inspections in Varna that resulted in the disposal of significant quantities of dairy products, Agriculture Minister Plamen Abrovski announced plans to amend the Ordinance on Dairy Products. These changes are intended to combat the prevalence of imitation dairy products and close loopholes regarding product quality, such as excessive water content in cheese, ensuring consumers are properly informed through clearer labeling. A working group has been established to finalize these amendments, with the goal of ensuring the quality of traditional products like yogurt and white brine cheese by the end of the year.

Additionally, the Ministry has launched large-scale inspections of imported grapes and other seasonal produce. Conducted alongside the Customs Agency and the NAP, these checks aim to verify origin and declared prices, particularly regarding grape supplies from Turkey. To ensure national quality standards, the government is also implementing 100 percent phytosanitary control involving laboratory analysis.
