# Bulgarian motorway infrastructure development

Bulgarian officials are advancing several major motorway projects across the country. 

On the Struma Motorway, regulatory obstacles near Kresna have been addressed through a new decree removing approximately 80 decares of land from ‘forests in the phase of old age’ status. The Kresna bypass is expected to be finished by the end of next year, with construction on the Krupnik-Kresna section projected for 2027 and full completion of the Sofia-Kulata route targeted for 2031.

Separately, the Ruse–Biala section of the Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo motorway is scheduled for completion by late 2028. This 70-kilometer project, co-financed by the European Union, involves complex engineering such as 85-meter-high viaducts. While technical challenges like loess soils and land expropriation persist, officials are planning the next phase from Biala to Veliko Tarnovo and intend to seek a concessionaire for segments beyond that point.

### 2026-08-13: Struma Motorway: Officials resolve land issues and set 2031 completion target

Bulgarian officials have resolved land regulation issues near Kresna to advance the Struma Motorway. The Kresna bypass is due by late 2026, with the full Sofia-Kulata section expected by 2031.
