Bulgarian law enforcement authorities have conducted large-scale operations targeting different forms of organized crime within the country.

In early October, a joint action by the Border Police and National Police directorates dismantled a human trafficking group in Sofia. The operation resulted in the detention of 22 individuals, primarily Syrian nationals, alongside citizens from Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. The group utilized vehicles with hidden compartments to transport migrants from Turkey toward Romania and Serbia.

Later in the month, the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP) disrupted an online financial fraud ring. In a coordinated operation involving 16 addresses, police dismantled four call centers operating in Sofia, Varna, and Burgas. The group targeted citizens across the European Union using fraudulent investment platforms, primarily for cryptocurrency, which utilized artificial intelligence to lure investors with promises of rapid profits.

Investigators found that funds were laundered through ‘financial mules’—individuals of low social status used to register companies and open bank accounts in Bulgaria. Authorities identified over 200 bank transfers and estimate financial damages at approximately 600,000 euros. The operation led to the arrest of nine individuals, with four formally charged. Seized items included electronic devices, documents, and approximately 20,000 euros in cash. The investigation, overseen by the Varna District Prosecutor's Office, remains ongoing regarding charges of fraud, money laundering, and participation in an organized criminal group.
