During the presidential election period, political figures and former heads of state have raised various concerns regarding the nature of the campaign and the future of the presidency. Ivaylo Mirchev, co-chairman of the ‘Da, Bulgaria’ party, emphasized the need for a president who maintains Bulgaria’s standing within the EU and NATO, acting as a “corrective force” to the government. Mirchev also used the platform to criticize infrastructure spending, specifically labeling a motorway deal as an “absolute record” in terms of cost per kilometer. Former presidents Rosen Plevneliev and Georgi Parvanov offered critiques of the electoral process. Plevneliev noted a lack of substantive debate and strategic vision among candidates, advocating for a strong pro-European institution and potential constitutional reforms. Parvanov criticized the campaign’s focus on scandals and compromising information, suggesting a need for restored dialogue between the government and opposition, as well as a debate regarding the powers of the head of state. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-25: Former Bulgarian presidents critique presidential election campaign Former Bulgarian presidents Rosen Plevneliev and Georgi Parvanov criticize the presidential election campaign for lacking substantive debate and being dominated by scandals and compromising information. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/former-bulgarian-presidents-critique-presidential-election-campaign ### 2026-10-25: Bulgarian politician Ivaylo Mirchev discusses presidential elections and infrastructure costs Ivaylo Mirchev of 'Da, Bulgaria' voted in the presidential elections, advocating for EU and NATO alignment and criticizing a 108 million euro motorway deal as an 'absolute record'. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/bulgarian-politician-ivaylo-mirchev-discusses-presidential-elections-and-infrastructure-costs --- Cite as: Bulgarian presidential election discourse.
