In early August 2026, the German environmental group BUND and its partners launched a campaign to stop offshore oil and gas extraction in the Baltic Sea. They collected roughly 88,000 signatures and prepared a petition for the European Commission, aiming for a September submission.

The drive was triggered by exploratory drilling by the Canadian‑owned Central European Petroleum (CEP) near Świnoujście, which uncovered a large Wolin East deposit estimated at about 22 million tonnes of crude and 5 billion m³ of natural gas. German NGOs, together with other environmental groups, formed a coalition to block the project, warning that extraction could damage protected marine areas, generate noise, cause pollution, and risk oil spills. Extraction has not yet begun, pending permits and regulatory approval.
