A political dispute has emerged in Burgenland following disclosures by the State Court of Audit regarding the region’s financial stability. René Wenk, Director of the Court of Audit, reported a projected total loss of nearly one billion euros between 2020 and 2026, with over 500 million euros of that loss expected in 2025 and 2026 alone. The audit further noted that cash reserves of 300 million euros held in 2021 are expected to be completely exhausted by the 2024/25 period.

These findings led to accusations from the SPÖ that Wenk was acting as a political actor rather than a neutral auditor. Club Chairman Roland Fürst stated that Wenk was “commenting, evaluating and polemicizing” instead of examining matters soberly, which he claimed damaged the institution’s authority.

In response, the FPÖ defended the Court of Audit, suggesting that attacks on the institution undermine the public’s ability to monitor tax expenditures. Conversely, the SPÖ has questioned the Court of Audit’s own rising costs, noting a 40 percent budget increase compared to 2022 and highlighting that Burgenland’s per capita expenditure for the Court is among the highest in Austria.
