Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré has advocated for a fundamental restructuring of the national education system to prioritize scientific and technical disciplines over literary studies. During the 2026 School Excellence Day, Traoré highlighted a significant imbalance in academic output, noting that while over 50% of baccalaureate graduates come from literary tracks, the number of scientific and technical graduates remains minimal. Specifically, out of approximately 65,000 graduates, only 571 obtained a scientific ‘Bac C’ and 38 earned a technical ‘Bac E’.

Traoré argued that this shift is essential for achieving economic sovereignty and industrialization, stating that the nation requires a workforce capable of practical production and managing industrial processes rather than just producing theorists. To address these shortages, the government intends to implement a massive reorientation of educational tracks and conduct large-scale recruitment of specialized teachers to bridge the technical skills gap.

In a move to modernize educational infrastructure, Traoré recently inaugurated a modern pedagogical complex at Nazi Boni University in Bobo-Dioulasso. Part of the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education for All (IPEQ), the 1,500-square-meter facility includes a 1,201-seat amphitheater, several mini-amphitheaters, and six practical work laboratories. Professor Zakaria Soré, national coordinator for major projects, noted the facility was entirely equipped by Burkinabè artisans to promote endogenous development. Traoré emphasized that such infrastructure symbolizes a commitment to national sovereignty through concrete actions.

In addition to educational reforms, Traoré has emphasized economic resilience through local production and vocational training, specifically noting initiatives to support war victims and their families through skills such as mechanics, agriculture, and tailoring.
