Sources: 10. Developments: 2. In September 2026, Burkina Faso launched the first edition of the Hakili Mousso national competition in Ouagadougou. Part of the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education for All (IPEQ), the event aimed to recognize female scientific talent among young women who earned scientific baccalaureates. The competition involved 84 finalists testing their skills in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, with winners receiving prizes such as cash, motorcycles, computers, and scholarships. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields and dismantle prejudices against women in technical higher education. The program includes long-term support for finalists, such as university placement assistance, housing, and health insurance. Reports indicate that the government has suspended national beauty pageants in favor of prioritizing intellectual achievement through competitions like Hakili Mousso. This shift has generated public debate; supporters view it as a move toward true empowerment by prioritizing intellect, while critics argue that the suspension of pageants is unnecessary and that women should retain the freedom to choose between scientific careers and beauty competitions. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-17: Burkina Faso suspends beauty pageants for women's science competition Burkina Faso has suspended national beauty pageants to launch HAKILI Mousso, a science competition for women designed to encourage careers in STEM fields. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/burkina-faso-suspends-beauty-pageants-for-womens-science-competition ### 2026-09-20: Burkina Faso honors female scientific talents at Hakili Mousso 2026 Burkina Faso celebrated the first Hakili Mousso competition winners, an initiative designed to promote female excellence in mathematics, physics, and chemistry among young women. 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/burkina-faso-honors-female-scientific-talents-at-hakili-mousso-2026 --- Cite as: Burkina Faso female scientific talent initiative.
