In Calgary, Duane Nepoose, 32, was sentenced to 10 years in prison following a high-speed police pursuit on Boxing Day 2024. Nepoose, driving a stolen minivan at speeds reaching at least 170 kilometres per hour, ran a red light and collided with multiple vehicles.

The crash resulted in the death of nine-year-old Victoria Desjardins and caused serious injuries to her mother and 12-year-old sister. Nepoose pleaded guilty to several charges, including dangerous driving causing death, robbery, and fleeing a police officer. While the Crown recommended a sentence of 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 years, Provincial Court Justice Indra Maharaj noted the defendant presented a “serious risk to the public,” ultimately issuing a 10-year sentence with credit for time already served.
