In their first match, they achieved a dominant 49-7 win against the Wagner Seahawks, led by quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who recorded 413 passing yards. Following that performance, the team secured an upset victory against the Virginia Tech Hokies with a score of 25-20 at California Memorial Stadium. The win came after the team played without starting quarterback Sagapolutele, who was sidelined due to a concussion. Backup Jackson Brousseau stepped in for his first start, throwing for 321 yards and one touchdown. Virginia Tech held the lead for much of the game, including a late fourth-quarter touchdown run by Ethan Grunkemeyer that put the Hokies ahead 20-19 with approximately one minute remaining. Cal responded with a rapid 75-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from reserve running back Ashten Emory with only 18 seconds left on the clock. Emory finished the game with 46 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The victory improved Cal’s record to 3-3 (2-1 in the ACC). ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: California Golden Bears defeat Virginia Tech 25-20 The California Golden Bears defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 25-20 in Berkeley, led by backup quarterback Jackson Brousseau and two touchdowns from running back Ashten Emory. 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/virginia-tech-football-prepares-for-matchup-against-california ### 2026-09-18: California Golden Bears defeat Wagner 49-7 California defeated Wagner 49-7, led by quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele’s career-high 413 passing yards and three touchdowns, and Adam Mohammed’s three first-quarter scores. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/california-golden-bears-defeat-wagner-49-7 --- Cite as: California Golden Bears football season.
