Canada and China have established a strategic partnership focused on trade, clean energy, and multilateral cooperation. This shift follows a period where Canadian leadership had identified China as a primary security threat due to foreign interference concerns.

Under the agreement, significant tariff reductions have been implemented, including China lowering duties on Canadian canola seed, seafood, and peas. In return, Canada has reduced tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to 6.1 percent. 

Beyond trade, the two nations have committed to renewing their ministerial environment dialogue to facilitate communication on climate policy and carbon markets. Cooperation is also expanding into clean technology sectors, such as hydrogen, energy storage, and renewable energy, alongside agreements regarding public security between the RCMP and China’s Ministry of Public Security.
