In late July 2026 a small group of protesters occupied the facilities of Mexico’s public television channel Canal Once, raising concerns that the channel’s 67‑year audiovisual archive could be damaged. The occupation began on 21 May 2026 when students and teachers from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) demanded institutional improvements, and the channel continued broadcasting from alternate sites during the takeover.

After more than two months, workers peacefully reclaimed the premises on 2 August 2026. Secretary of Public Education Mario Delgado’s first visual inspection confirmed broken material and disorder on the floor, indicating damage to the historic archive that holds over 70 years of content. Some protesters claimed force was used during the reclamation.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced investigations into possible damage to the national patrimony and into alleged funding of the occupiers. Dialogue tables involving the students, the IPN and federal authorities will continue, and a technical evaluation of the infrastructure and archive is planned. Canal Once pledged to assess and restore its infrastructure and archive, resume full operations, and keep negotiations open to address the protesters’ grievances while safeguarding the channel’s cultural assets.
