Violent unrest and arson attacks at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) led to the suspension of academic activities and the evacuation of student residences. The instability was triggered by an arson attack at the Bellville campus, specifically targeting the Old Education building.

Protests were driven by student opposition to the university’s R4.2 billion debt and the proposed 2027 Financial Recovery Plan, which critics warned could make higher education inaccessible. The unrest resulted in property damage and at least three injuries. While management ordered students to vacate campus, some students expressed difficulty in traveling due to a lack of financial means.

Following the escalation, Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela indicated that negotiations had begun to restore calm, noting that the university’s decision to withdraw the 2027 financial plan served as a starting point for discussions.
