Initially, the city introduced tax incentives to encourage recycling. Approximately 29,000 taxpayers, representing nearly 40% of the eligible population, received reductions in their urban solid waste collection and treatment taxes. Residents who visited local Ecoparques seven or more times received a 50% discount, while those with three to six visits received a 30% discount. This relief, estimated at 2.6 million euros, was designed to mitigate the impact of state-mandated waste taxes. Following these fiscal measures, the city launched a sustainability project in Parque Ribalta. This phase involves the reuse of urban waste by spreading wood mulch, derived from city-wide tree pruning, as a natural ground cover to conserve soil moisture and prevent erosion. The municipality also reported maintenance work on the park's pond and announced plans for further investments in urban furniture and the ‘La Pèrgola’ project. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-27: Castellón begins waste recycling project in Parque Ribalta Castellón is reusing city tree pruning waste as natural mulch in Parque Ribalta to improve soil health and moisture retention, alongside recent pond cleaning and planned furniture upgrades. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/castelln-begins-waste-recycling-project-in-parque-ribalta ### 2026-09-13: Castellón residents receive waste tax reductions for recycling Nearly 29,000 residents in Castellón will benefit from waste tax reductions totaling 2.6 million euros by using local recycling facilities and mobile Ecoparques. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/castelln-residents-receive-waste-tax-reductions-for-recycling --- Cite as: Castellón urban waste and sustainability initiatives.
