Cateno De Luca, leader of the Sud chiama Nord movement, has advocated for increased representation of local mayors within Parliament to provide practical territorial expertise to national and regional institutions. De Luca argued that effective administrators with concrete results can disrupt traditional political structures.

This stance has transitioned into direct political confrontation in Sicily. De Luca recently criticized Agrigento Mayor Michele Sodano, accusing the administration of lacking strategy and failing to address the water supply crisis in Maddalusa. This rivalry is unfolding amidst intensifying competition for the 2027 Sicilian regional elections, involving shifting alliances between De Luca and former ally Ismaele La Vardera.

Following criticisms from journalist Michele Serra, De Luca has denied allegations of political profiteering. In a letter addressing these claims, De Luca asserted that his recent discussions with Giorgia Meloni are not intended to secure personal positions. Instead, he maintains that his objective is to prioritize the needs of local authorities and peripheral territories within the national agenda, characterizing his actions as being driven by “administrative common sense” rather than political bargaining.
