Catholic religious leaders and communities in Portugal and Brazil have launched initiatives to support priestly vocations and missionary work.

In Portugal, the Diocese of Angra is observing Seminary Week from November 1 to 8 under the theme, “Communities that pray, seminaries that flourish.” The program includes vocational meetings and testimonies by seminarians on Terceira Island, including a prayer vigil at the Igreja das Lajes. This follows calls from other Portuguese leaders, such as Bishop Vitorino Soares and Bishop João Lavrador, who emphasized the need for spiritual, communal, and financial support to sustain seminaries.

Additional efforts in Portugal include the Diocese of Guarda, where Bishop José Miguel Pereira released a video message calling for a renewed commitment to prayer and support for seminarists. He highlighted a new formation team composed of priests and laypeople. In Porto, the Diocesan Secretariat for Vocation Pastoral released a video titled “Inside the Seminary” to showcase the daily routines of students for the 2026/2027 pastoral year. The Major Seminary of Our Lady of the Conception is currently operating temporarily in Vilar due to renovation works and hosts 30 students from the dioceses of Porto, Aveiro, Angra, Coimbra, and Vila Real.

In Brazil, the Paróquia Santa Luzia in Votuporanga held a Missionary Week from October 19 to 23. The initiative, themed “One in Christ, united in mission,” involved community groups, including catechists and members of the Terço dos Homens, visiting families to share religious messages.
