The Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication warned that the ‘attention economy’ is altering human cognitive abilities and the depth of interpersonal communication by fostering superficial relationships and immediate reactions. The Pope’s message proposes a ‘conversion of the gaze,’ urging individuals to treat attention as a ‘valuable resource for relationships’ rather than a commodity to be sold. This concept of ‘attention hygiene’ was previously referenced in the Pope’s encyclical on artificial intelligence, Magnifica Humanitas. In observance of the day, religious communities, such as the Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pszów, Poland, have highlighted the importance of information responsibility and the need for mindful engagement to counter the challenges of digital content. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-29: World Communications Day emphasizes mindful engagement in digital era Observing World Communications Day, the Catholic Church calls for mindful attention and meaningful connection to counter the superficiality of the digital clickbait era. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/world-communications-day-emphasizes-mindful-engagement-in-digital-era ### 2026-09-29: Pope Leo XIV announces 2027 World Communications Day theme Pope Leo XIV has set the theme for the 2027 World Communications Day as ‘A New Gaze: Paying Attention in the Age of Clickbait,’ addressing the risks of the digital attention economy. 20 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/pope-leo-xiv-announces-2027-world-communications-day-theme --- Cite as: Catholic Church World Communications Day themes.
