Slovakia and the Czech Republic are utilizing the Modernization Fund and other regional programs to finance various infrastructure and industrial upgrades.

In Slovakia and the Czech Republic, efforts have focused on the industrial and heating sectors to increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Slovakia announced a 150 million euro call for industrial modernization targeting enterprises and utility suppliers, with grants for technological upgrades reaching up to 30 million euros. Simultaneously, the Czech Republic’s State Environmental Fund has distributed subsidies for the ecological transformation of heating plants, supporting projects such as the installation of large heat pumps and biomass boilers for companies like ČEZ and Veolia.

Regional development in Slovakia is being furthered through the Slovakia 2021–2027 Program. The Ministry of Investment, Regional Development and Informatization (MIRRI) has allocated over 15.1 million euros to 21 regional projects, including road modernization between Levoča and the Košice region, a new bridge in Opatovce nad Nitrou, and school and cultural renovations in various locations. Banská Bystrica has also secured European funds for its ‘Green Neighborhoods’ initiative, targeting green infrastructure and sports facilities.

To address the needs of smaller local governments, MIRRI has launched the ‘Million for Small Municipalities’ grant initiative. This program allocates 1,110,178 euros to municipalities with populations of 500 residents or fewer, providing grants between 1,000 and 3,500 euros for public space improvements and infrastructure. The funds are distributed across regions, with the Prešov region receiving the largest share of 347,000 euros. To minimize administrative hurdles, applications are processed through a simplified electronic eGrant system.
