The CGIL trade union has filed a formal complaint with Italy’s Court of Auditors regarding the financing of the Messina Strait Bridge project. Led by Secretary-General Maurizio Landini, the union is demanding an audit of public funds, noting that costs have already exceeded €13 billion with no defined final price. 

CGIL alleges that EU procurement and environmental regulations may have been breached and expressed concern that funding for essential complementary infrastructure is missing. The union argued that “when billions of euros of citizens’ money are at stake, it is a duty to demand transparency, legality and proper use of public resources,” further claiming that any wasted funds would divert resources from hospitals, schools, and necessary infrastructure in southern Italy.
